How To Ruin Your Blog’s Reputation By Installing This Plugin

How To Ruin Your Blog’s Reputation By Installing This Plugin post image

If you’re a blogger, especially if you’re using WordPress as a platform, you must surely be aware about a plugin that I’ll be mentioning in this article. I’m sure that as a blogger, you’re always looking to increase readership or simply put, traffic to your blog. But have you ever wondered that just in order to get those few penny-like visits, you might actually ruin your blog’s reputation?

As a blogger, I would not want that I loose my blog’s reputation EVEN TO A SINGLE PERSON! Yes, that might sound as if I’m overconfident, but it’s something that I want. I simply don’t want someone to make a pact of not visiting my blog again.

So what plugin is it that I’m talking, which can ruin your blog’s reputation?

It’s – Thank Me Later

Oops! I can imagine the expression on your face! But I have quite a few reasons to explain why I don’t recommend using it (anymore).

My Reasons

Following are a few of my reasons why I hate using the plugin. You might have more, or none.

1) The Annoyance

If you comment on blog posts regularly, like me, then those ‘Thank You’ emails will gradually start annoying you. Because all they contain is the following -

Thank you for your comment at (Blog Title). You left the following comment (Your Comment).

As if I don’t know what I wrote in that comment box out there!

2) Blog Owner’s Don’t Know How To Use It

This also included (does not include anymore) me! As a new blogger, I heard about this plugin and quickly installed it. After much time, I used it CORRECTLY! Until then, a mail used to be sent for every comment on my blog! In fact, I used to get annoyed by those mails because even I used to get them myself!

Some people use the settings professionally – Such as sending ONLY 1 MAIL for the commentator. But yet, IT IS ANNOYING.

3) It RARELY brings in any traffic

The plugin’s description somewhat means “It increases more engagement on your blog, but to be honest, it doesn’t! According to me, it has a potential to decrease the engagement on your blog!

My History

I used this plugin in the beginning, until some time, but now I wouldn’t use this plugin at all. That’s a decision.

Alternatives

Well, I don’t have any alternatives which can be compared to this plugin because I just don’t prefer using it.

But I would strongly use a plugin that would notify the users when their comment is replied.

The best alternative to this plugin is – Comment Reply Notification

You can find the plugin here.

That’s all for this post. If you have a history with this plugin, or if you’re currently using it, please share your brief stories. I and others would love to hear from you

I don’t think its Annoying its a great way to increase your subscriber which will convert Subscriber to Sales….. I saw most of top Affiliate Marketer using it and got success too.
Its Depends. But yeah i am agree, we should show this only one time for one IP. Then it will be not annoying features at all.

Hi Amit. It’s your opinion and I wouldn’t argue with that. But to be honest, every commentator is aware about the plugin and if he/she visits a new blog and leaves a comment there, the first thing that’s offered to him is a thank you email, which they very well know is not worth opening as all it has is what I wrote above as an example!

      Thanks for passing by!

        Guestt what Raaj,

This is a plugin which got publicity from me :D

Some time ago when I was leaving a comment on blogs like ITechCode, I was receiving a “Thank You” email everytime, than I though I should also do it. I asked Amit about the plugin he were using to send a Thank you email automatically to commentators, but he didn’t tell me about the plugin he were using. So, I spent sometime on Googling it and found this one and I think it is better than Amit’s one.

We can also limit the number of emails to send to commentators using Thanks Me Later plugin. Now I only send Thank you email to first commentators only.

The funny thing is that when Mairaj Pirzada received a thank you email from me he asked me which plugin I’m using, So I told him about Thank Me Later and he had written a post about it :P

True.. You told me about it, and now I’ve just stopped using this plugin.
Why? Just because, I don’t want my blog commentators to receive Thank You message email too, after getting thanks from me in the comments section. I know, thats a good way to engage, but I believe serving with Awesome Content using Mailing List would be more better than this.

I think, thank you email will annoy! Oh. I’d suggest you not to use that plugin. I think, it just makes your server LOAD, because you want to thank your first time commentators. It’ll be used rarely, and will LOAD your server 24 hr.. I think! Not sure.

      Hello Deepak.

It’s good to see that it increases your blog traffic. If we could have a screenshot mentioning those email clients as referrals? (Because these would be emails to different email clients such as Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail etc). Looking forward to your reply! Thanks for passing by :)

    Hi Raaj,

I agree with you, I use to use it too upon the recommendation of my mentor. I personally find them annoying because it’s not going to make me want to visit you any more than I already do. When I see those in my inbox I just delete them and never open them anymore.

Question on the Comment Reply Notification. Is that similar to the Reply Me plug-in? I’m trying to locate an alternative since it hasn’t been updated since 2009 and they don’t intend to update it. This one hasn’t been updated in two years either so it’s hard to find one that has. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Adrienne! Thank you for a valuable comment!

Same is the case with me (Well, since a couple of weeks). Whenever I get those mails with a not-so-attractive subject line, I just hover over them and press the delete button on my lovely laptop.

You know, the reason why I’m not using Reply-Me plugin is …Oops! There’s no reason! I actually Googled “Comment Reply Plugin Wordpress” and saw Comment-Reply-Notification” as the first thing. So I just installed it!
Comparing Reply-Me and Comment-Reply-Notification, both are almost similar. The only change I noticed is that Reply-Me has that cool background color which makes the mail somewhat more attractive! That’s it!

BTW, if you’re reading this comment as an email in your inbox, you’re in fact having a demo of Comment-Reply-Notification! So what are your thoughts? Which one would you go for?

I agree that the plugin which sends a reply to the user is pretty much useless. I do get notifications and I get it from top bloggers and it does annoy me sometimes. Even to the extent not to come back and read their blog. Really something like that makes no sense.

Notification is definitely annoying and just starts filling into the inbox. However, I also believe that in many cases its very useful, such as solving some coding issues (e.g. Java, JS etc.) But I guess many times, when I get notifications, I simply don’t read them! Also a thing to note, whenever I add a plugin to my site, I’d love to make sure it doesn’t really impacts my page load time. I’ve seen many plugins will dramatically increases your page load!

Yes Raaj, I do agree that installing certain pluggins definitely affects your blogs. Sometimes, it causes a real problem in viewing up the blog properly. This causes a serious trouble as according to me. Bloggers maintaining WordPress blogs must be aware of all these pluggins. Thanks for the share!!

Some folks even use this plugin to do some sort of promotion. They do like send you a free ebook, thanking you for commenting. I think this plugin is not bad. The main problem is what you mention in point 2. Some bloggers just install and think it’s done. If it’s optioned to send just once, that will be great

    It’s annoying.

It’s EXACTLY as annoying as those Twitter auto-DMs. And when I was new to Twitter, I thought, “Oh, cool, they took the time to THANK me for following! Isn’t that sweet?” and so I found a site that let me do that and I started doing it, too.

And promptly got smacked down for it, and then when I followed a few hundred more people, started smacking others down for it. It’s not cute or necessary and it’s not PERSONAL.

“Contact Commenters” is a better plug-in, because you use it INTENTIONALLY, and you select the commenters you want to email. You write the email. Yes, you can mass-email the entire world if you want to abuse the tool, but it’s still a good TOOL.

You know, even I hate such auto DMs and believe me, when that old Twitter was new to me, the auto DMs were the only best thing I had on Twitter and currently, it’s obviously the opposite.

Do you personally use that plugin, Contact Commenters, yourself Holly?

Oh man, it’s a REAL annoying thing. Tell me, why would I like to get a notification email in which I would be notified that I have commented on a blog. Come on, I know, I was the one who commented. And if someone is saying an AUTOMATIC thank you for that then, it sucks.

Again I would say that ‘Great minds think alike’ :) . And you know, if someone actually sends me a mail MANUALLY, like “Hey Raaj. It’s (blogowner)! You know, I just saw your comment at a post on my blog and thank you for that! You really added value to it. I’ve added you on Twitter (I’m @(blogowner) and added you on Facebook. Let’s have a small chat!” ….then I would actually LOVE it. But …we shouldn’t expect stupid things lol!

    Hi Raaj,
I really got curious about the plugin, and come to think of it, I agree with you. After my comment gets approved on a certain blog, I receive an email from them thanking me for commenting and something else. At first I guess it’s fine with me, but if it gets frequent I tend to get annoyed especially if I receive A LOT of that kind of messages on my inbox. Comment reply notification, I think is a great alternative. Thanks for sharing with us your thoughts!

Without realising it, those emails were even pissing me off so I can’t even begin to imagine what it was doing to my commenters! :)

Glad I re-read this post as it made sense at the right time. My only reservation is using a plugin that’s not been updated since 2010. Research reveals though that’s it purring along on many bigger blogs so I took the plunge, ditched StCR and Thank-You.

    Well done, mate.
